Types of tooth staining
There are three different types of tooth staining; extrinsic, intrinsic and age-related.
- Extrinsic tooth discolouration occurs on the outer layer of the tooth enamel, which is stained through lifestyle-related influences, such as smoking and drinking coffee.
- Intrinsic discolouration occurs inside the tooth or within the dentin layer and is caused by medication, trauma or injury to the tooth. Tooth decay and overconsumption of fluoride can also cause intrinsic staining.
- Age-related discolouration combines intrinsic and extrinsic factors as our teeth become stained over time, and the dentin naturally yellows. The outer layer of the tooth also becomes thinner, revealing the yellowing hue underneath.
