New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile
New year new you? How about ‘new year, new smile’! The best way to achieve perfect pearly whites is to start from the comfort of your home. Keep reading to discover our top tips to keep cavities at bay and ensure your smile shines all year round.
Make caring for your smile a priority
Brushing twice daily for two minutes is our dentist’s recommended routine to improve and maintain your oral health. This should be an essential part of your daily routine to help remove bacterial plaque and food debris that accumulates throughout your day-to-day. Brushing every day as recommended will help prevent gingivitis (commonly known as gum disease), halitosis (bad breath) and cavities (tooth decay).
Don’t forget to FLOSS
We have a saying here at Sarum Dental in Salisbury: ‘you don’t need to floss all your teeth…just the ones you want to keep!’ Alongside routine brushing, you should aim to floss at least once daily. Flossing is JUST as important as brushing in helping to clean your mouth and removing any hard-to-reach and sticky biofilm from between your teeth. WaterPik’s and Tepe interdental brushes are a real investment in keeping your smile healthier for longer.
Make sure you have the right tools
As long as you’re brushing your teeth consistently every day, the type of toothbrush doesn’t really matter. However, if your budget can stretch to purchasing an electric toothbrush, these devices are exceptionally helpful in ensuring you’re brushing for the right amount of time and giving the oscillating effect needed to remove stubborn bacteria. Some electric toothbrushes even come with an app so you can better control your oral hygiene habits!
Investing in antimicrobial mouthwashes can also help rinse the teeth and gums of debris after brushing and flossing. If you’re unsure which mouthwash to purchase, our dentists in Salisbury can advise on the best product for you.
Leave your bad habits in 2022
To ensure your smile is in top condition, think about curbing sugary drinks and snacks. The more time sugar is allowed to sit on the surface of your teeth, the more significant the risk of cavities and tooth decay! And if you’re a smoker, NOW is the time to quit. If you need further information to help you kick this bad habit, read our previous blog and contact our dentists for cessation advice.
