Have your child’s teeth started getting wobbly? As parents ourselves, we know this milestone can make you feel proud, sentimental and perhaps slightly unsure as to what to do next.

Should you pull it out? Leave it alone? Book a dental appointment? Keep reading to learn what our Salisbury-based dentists advise parents when their little ones start losing their teeth!

When Do Wobbly Teeth Start?

Children typically start losing their baby teeth between the ages of 5 and 7 years old. It’s a natural part of growing up, making space for their adult teeth to come through! However, it is important to keep a close eye on things so their new teeth emerge clean and healthy.

Don’t Pull It Out!

We understand the temptation, and even the frustration your child might feel. A really wobbly tooth just needs a little extra help to come out…but pulling a tooth too early can cause pain, bleeding and even damage to the gum!

So what can you do?

Your child could gently wiggle the tooth with their tongue or a clean finger. If it’s then hanging by a thread and your child is comfortable, you might help it out with a tissue. However, if it’s causing pain or seems stuck, then it’s best to leave it or visit our dental practice in Salisbury for a check-up.

Make Sure To Keep Brushing

Your child may feel nervous about brushing around their loose tooth, but it’s essential to continue their oral hygiene routine. Here are our top tips:

  • Use a soft, bristled brush
  • Gently brush around the wobbly tooth
  • Make sure to brush twice a day for two minutes each time
  • Avoid sugary or sticky snacks and beverages

This will keep bacteria at bay and give the incoming adult teeth a clean and healthy start!

“Absolutely brilliant dentist who my whole family go to. The team are friendly and knowledgeable. We can get appointments quickly, and they've cared for my children exceptionally well. They give clear advice and take the time to explain treatments and options. I highly recommend them.”

When Should Your Child See The Dentist?

Most loose teeth are nothing to worry about. But if you notice any of the following, don’t hesitate to give our Salisbury-based dental practice a ring:

  • A baby tooth that won’t fall out, and the adult tooth is already pushing through
  • Persistent pain, swelling or bleeding
  • Loose teeth in very young children (under four years old)
  • No signs of tooth loss by seven years
  • Bad breath or discolouration around the loose tooth
